WILLIAM McELCHERAN, SCULPTOR, ARCHITECT AND PAINTER

Did you know that St. Teresa’s Church owes a great deal to William McElcheran?

He was the artist who:

  • Designed  St. Teresa’s Church
  • Created the Stations of the Cross that are installed at St. Teresa’s
  • Created the Cover of the Baptismal Font
  • Painted “Our Lady of Newfoundland,” the painting that hangs in our Adoration Chapel.  This painting was donated in memory of Edward Duff by his wife Elizabeth and their children.
  • Sculpted the four evangelists that adorn our sanctuary space.

Matthew is depicted as a human being.

Mark is depicted as a lion.

Luke is shown as an ox

John is usually shown as an eagle.

These symbols find their source in the Biblical Book of Revelation, Chapter 4, verse 7.

  • Designed and created the tester that hangs above our altar. The tester carries the Scriptural quote,

“Worthy is the lamb that was slain to receive power, divinity, wisdom, strength, honour, glory and benediction .” (Revelation 5:12)

In 1964, William McElcheran was commissioned by the Redemptorists and parishioners of St. Teresa’s to create these art works.

The Church has a long tradition of using art and music as means to draw people ever more deeply into prayer.

We give thanks for the musicians, artists, sculptors and architects who give glory to God through their skill and talents,

and move us to do the same.
